How much fence does a pool need?

The fence goes around the pool and its deck, not the whole yard, so measure the deck edge you want to enclose. A 15 x 30 ft pool takes about 100 ft of fence, and a 20 x 40 ft pool 150-180 ft. A 16 x 32 ft pool with 4 ft of deck on every side is a 24 x 40 ft rectangle: 128 ft. Free-form pools and decks with curves or corners need 10-15% more.

If the house forms one side of the enclosure, the fence gets shorter, but many codes then require alarms on every door that opens toward the pool. Fencing the whole backyard instead of just the pool is allowed in many places too, as long as that fence meets the same pool barrier rules.

Pool fence code requirements

Most US cities and counties build their rules on the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) or the same section of the residential code. Your local version can be stricter, so check with the building department before you order anything. The common rules:

• Height: at least 48 in, measured on the outside. Some areas ask for 60 in.
• Openings: a 4 in ball must not pass through anywhere.
• Bottom gap: no more than 2 in above the ground under the ISPSC.
• No footholds: horizontal rails less than 45 in apart go on the pool side, and the gaps between vertical pickets then stay under 1-3/4 in. Chain link mesh can be at most 2-1/4 in.
• Gate: self-closing, self-latching and swinging out, away from the pool, with the latch release at least 54 in above the bottom of the gate.

That is why a standard 4 ft picket or ranch-style fence often fails as a pool barrier: its rails make a ladder on the outside.

Which pool fence to choose

• Removable mesh: cheapest and see-through; comes out for parties or winter.
• Aluminum: permanent, low upkeep, matches most yards.
• Vinyl: privacy around the pool; check the gaps meet code.
• Wrought iron: heavy and decorative; needs rust care near salt water.
• Glass, semi-frameless: clear view with slim metal posts.
• Glass, frameless: nothing between you and the view; the most expensive.

Removable mesh is also the one pool fence many owners install themselves: DIY kits cost about $8-$14 per foot, and 4 x 12 ft sections sell for roughly $65-$130 at home centers. You drill holes in the deck for the poles, so the layout has to be right the first time.
